ISTANBUL TICARET UNIVERSITY

Construction

The Istanbul Chamber of Commerce purchased the land in Eminönü, Unkapanı street, where the building is located, in 1961, to build a Commercial Palace. Afterward, an architectural project competition was organized for the building to be built on the parcel in 1963. Architect Orhan Şahinler won the architectural project competition. Thereafter, the building was completed in 1971. It is one of the exemplary buildings with the first open office plan of the building period. The building is also important in terms of hosting works of art consisting of ceramics, reliefs, tiles, and stained glass belonging to many artists who are important in terms of modern art.

Project Description

The building was built on the embankment on the shore of the estuary. Due to the liquefaction in the ground over time, the structure has been tilted towards the estuary by about 40 cm. Since it is not possible to improve the ground of the building and strengthen it in its current state, it is reconstructed in accordance with its original form. Before starting the work on the building, an inventory of all the ceramics, reliefs, tiles, and stained glass inside was taken and their dismantling was carried out by expert teams. All these dismantled works of art have been restored in the workshops established on the site and will be placed in their current places and reused after the construction of the building. After the completion of this construction process, the building will be used by Istanbul Commerce University for its educational function.
